Endoscopic Ultrasound - Guided Fine Needle Aspiration procedures have improved the accuracy of endoscopic biopsies significantly.
With its unique ability to obtain a biopsy, EUS – FNA offers an advantage in the early diagnosis and staging of malignant tumors.
Pancreatic, liver, mediastinal, retro-peritonel and other difficult to access pathological lesions have been safely approached using new techniques performed more and more frequently in diagnostic endoscopy centers.
Diagnostic endoscopy centers are usually staffed with a team of gastroentrologists, ultrasound endoscopists, nurses, anesthesiologists and other technical personnel.
To provide expert opinion on “adequacy of specimens”, Tampa Pathology Laboratory provides an on-site pathologist or a cytotechnologist at the time of scheduled ultrasound – guided fine needle aspirations.
Our pathologist or cytotechnologist also processes the specimens on site making them suitable for further examinations depending on the history and clinical diagnosis.
Our pathologist or cytotechnologist will work in tandem with the ultrasound endoscopist, and decide on site the different procedures to be performed on the specimens obtained. We routinely send out the fluid of pancreatic cysts for CEA, amylase and mucicarmine stain.
